Nimco Adan Hurre, popularly known as Nimco Gabaydo, was born in 1969 in the Gudubi area of Togdheer in central Somaliland, but grew up in Berbera and completed secondary school in Burao. In 1991 she started composing literature, singing songs about peace, and writing poems about how to reconcile communities in a time of conflict. Throughout her career, she tried to use her literary gifts to resolve inter-communal conflict.

Poetry is born out of emotion, as a way to express a person’s feelings in writing. In Arabic, which has had a significant influence on Somali literature, poetry is known as Sha’ir, which means things that come from your feelings. This captures how Nimco started expressing her feelings through literature in an attempt to bring peace to her community as well as advocating for the oppressed and for marginalized women.

“I have fought many battles with the use of literature and supported women,” said Nimco in an interview with Omer Seerbiya in 2014. “Many of my poems focus on the issues women face and how they can be solved, such as girls whose rights are taken by their brothers, or young girls who are married to old men and girls who marry young and whose husbands leave them with children to look after with no support. I have always said that women should be given the right to stand on their own two feet and not be destroyed.

“In my opinion, the best piece of literature I have ever created is about women’s rights, and not about me. I composed it in 2003, when I was talking about women’s issues and how they permeate every sphere of our life and society.”

Nimco never tired of supporting women through her literature. Over many years, she consistently encouraged women to study and always prioritized their development. In 2013, Nimco Adan Hurre won an international poetry competition held in Tunisia for African poets, demonstrating her considerable literary talent. She died in Hargeisa in 2015 and is survived by four children.
